About Us
Inverlussa Marine Services evolved from parent company Inverlussa Shellfish Co Ltd, which was started as a diversification from the original fishing business. In the late 1980s the Wilsons diversified into mussel farming and within a decade they were able to expand, with the launch of their first purpose-built mussel vessel Kilean in May 1999. That side of the business quickly grew to become what is today one of the biggest mussel producing operations in Scotland. A second vessel, the A. G. Salmon designed Margaret Sinclair, was launched in January 2006 to cope with increased production, after the company acquired a neighbouring mussel farm.
It was the semi-seasonal nature of mussel farming which prompted Inverlussa to seize the opportunity to take on contracting, delivery and ferry work for salmon farms and small island servicing.
A steady build-up of the marine servicing side of the business saw the firm buy out an associated marine transport operator in early 2010. The sale included the Carol Anne, a 16m Noble's built workboat, which provided the flexibility to improve service.
Now, with mussel farming, traditional marine services and fishing still going strong, Inverlussa is facing an exciting future as it prepares to welcome the state-of-the-art 27m 300 tonne vessel Helen Burnie into service in April, 2012. The vessel is a substantial investment, aimed at enabling the company's future growth into Scotland's emerging renewable energy market.
Today the company employs 15 local people, with at least six new jobs on the horizon when the new boat starts work.
